Dr Stephen Beare is the director and principal of ANALYTECON, a boutique consulting firm that specialises in the quantitative and strategic analysis of market, resource and investment issues for public and private sector clients.

Stephen has combined a professional background in economic mathematical and statistical analysis and research with the development of business strategies and public policy. The focus of his work at ANYTECON is on market analysis, risk assessment and management, as well as the evaluation of environmental and other policy options.

Since forming ANALYTECON Stephen has been developing portfolio assessment strategies and tools in publishing, resource development and addressing competing environmental demands.

Specific projects include accounting for correlated price and production risks across resource commodity markets in asset and option valuations, working with the publishing industry to develop risk and return profiles across multiple genres and adaptive strategies for managing environmental, and developing consumptive water demands. Other projects include the processing of real time digital news feeds to extract measures of market sentiment and perceived risks, assessing the effectiveness of weather modification technologies and pricing in retail and wholesale energy markets.

Prior to forming ANALYTECON Stephen was a principal at Concept Economics (formerly CRA International). The majority of his work at Concept Economics was in the area of retail competition, specifically in in the banking, bookselling, groceries and petrol sectors. Stephen also worked on issues facing the mining industry and the use of real options to evaluate climate change adaptation strategies and on assessing household demand for emerging broadband technologies. Other projects included the evaluation telecommunication pricing strategies, third party access to utility infrastructure and a study on ‘behind the border’ issues in food security for APEC.

Prior to joining Concept Economics and Stephen was the Chief Economist of ABARE where he had oversight of wide range of research into issues faced by agriculture and resource industries. His own research and advisory role was focused in the areas of biosecurity, water policy, survey design and analysis.

Stephen holds a B.Sc. degree from the University of California and M.Sc. and PhD degrees from Oregon State University.
